Smell

Smell is a funny thing.

Quite often a smell is powerful enough to trigger off memories and emotions. As part of cleaning my car i bought an air freshener that said 'New Car Smell' and i wondered if that was actually what my car smelt like in 1998. Then gradually it reminded me of someone elses car and where we went when i first got in it - which was a day trip to North Wales Hospital in 2004.

Often when exploring the forgotten ruins of the country (and beyond) they have a certain smell that tells you that you've arrived! Cane Hill has a smell all of its own, something a little more than 'old knackered building smell'. When we first found a way into 1 of its sealed off ward blocks that hadn't been opened since 1990 it was surreal, but part of its whole atmosphere, and something you couldn't capture was the overwhelming smell of disinfectant that made it feel a lot more like it was still used.

My question is, if we live in a world of technology and constant research into new methods of just about everything - why can't you capture a smell, like capturing a photograph. Photographs remind me of what i've seen but there's something missing.

I do love musty hospital smell, but knackered old building smell has been lost on me recently - probably because I've spent some weeks tiresomely taking rotten wood, lathe and plaster out of an old house. The smell of the aged oak and pine fittings was a delight though! :D

Magic Tree's "New Car Smell" is cack by the way. ;) I've never been in a new car that's smelt like it.

I know exactly what you mean ;) So you're not the only nutter!
certain places I've been do have a unique smell of their own, and I will admit to loving the musty, dank smell of rotting building...a comment most people would find a bit odd I suppose.
Being a complete foodie too is great, and loads of smells remind me of being younger, in me nans kitchen, mums dinner, etc.

...and I will admit I do like the smell when you walk past a scratty old pub, stale ale and fags :D *now you know I'm not quite right*

Oh and the smell of the sea....

I fukk off now and stop wittering :D

why can't you capture smell... that was just the question which lead to a great novel... Perfume.
I've been always quite influenced by that, I mean, there are lots of smells that take me to old places. I can even recognise some people before seeing them - only by their own natural scent ;)
Good reflection!

I remember scratch and sniff quite fondly. :D

You're quite right of course but I have reservations about what the smell camera would be used for. :D

I can see the fart competitions league already. :O
