A friend of mine dropped it in a muddy bog, it was completely covered in stinking crap and the lens started grinding

It's on its way to Nikon, my insurance covers it thankfully.

hope the car cleaning exersice went well! shame about the muddy puddle incident but at least you're covered! so it's not all bad.
